Adam Sullivan formally set the stage for a showdown with Democratic incumbent Jerrold Nadler (NY CD-08) by filing in excess of the required number of petition signatures with the New York City Board of Elections, placing his candidacy on the Democratic primary ballot. Immediately following the filing, Sullivan issued a challenge to Nadler to publicly debate the issue of impeachment.

You may have heard that NY CD-08 resident Adam Sullivan is challenging Rep. Jerry Nadler in the Democratic primary, but you may not know why.

Why would someone challenge such a well-established and well-liked progressive like Rep. Jerry Nadler?  What could possibly be gained in such an audacious move?

The Town Hall Meeting/Impeachment Forum I have been yammering on about is happening this Sunday in NYC (details below the fold).  Congressman Nadler is one of the invited speakers and as of this morning his scheduler still did not know if Rep. If you're not working or otherwise busy, please join us for a Honk-to-Impeach outside Rep. Nadler's Manhattan office Friday afternoon.  We'll be on the southwest corner of Varick and King Streets (right by the entrance to the 1 train) at 3:00 pm for an hour or longer if the weather is warm.  Bring a sign and a thumbs up for the honkers.

It's NOT too late for impeachment, it's an imperative.  If you think it is too late for impeachment do you also think it is too late for the Constitution?  Here in New York we think impeachment is long overdue.  New Yorkers are actively lobbying House Judiciary Committee (HJC) members Rep. Anthony Weiner (NY CD-9) and Rep. Jerry Nadler (NY CD-8).  

One group met with Anthony Weiner's district director on Friday and asked him to convey their message to Weiner that he stated back in December that he would sign onto Wexler's letter to Conyers and they are still waiting for him to make good on his promise.  They hope to hear back in a few days and will keep you posted.

Another group has come together under the banner of AskNadler2Impeach.org to lobby Nadler to support impeachment.  AskNadler2Impeach.org is hosting a Town Hall Meeting/Impeachment Forum next Sunday, March 9th, from 4-6pm at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South, NYC. to address the question Is Impeachment Necessary to Protect the Constitution?  

On Monday Keith Ellison (MN-5) became the fifth Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee to sign Wexler's letter to Conyers requesting hearings on impeachment in the HJC.

Here in New York we are working on HJC members Anthony Weiner and Jerry Nadler.  Constituents in Weiner's district have been trying to meet with him and hope to schedule something today with his Chief of Staff.  Please email me (email addy is in profile) if you live in Queens and would like to be a part of the meeting.

Hey folks, we've got a hero.  Congressman Robert Wexler took the floor at the House last night and officially announced the call for hearings on impeachment in the Judiciary Committee.  He needs our support and the first step is to call/email/write your reps today, Chairman Conyers, the Judiciary Committee, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  Contact info and more below the fold.

There were two opportunities to "bird-dog" Rep. Nadler this past Sunday at events where he was scheduled to appear in support of Hillary Clinton.  In the early afternoon he was at Hudson Guild at a candidates forum sponsored by Chelsea Reform Democrats.  Later he was at a NOW-NYC forum on How Critical is the Women's Vote? featuring Congressman Jerrold Nadler, former Congresswoman and Brooklyn D.A. & NYC Comptroller Elizabeth Holtzman, and Sheryl McCarthy, USA Today & Newsday Columnist and Distinguished Lecturer in Journalism at CUNY.  I attended and flyered at the NOW-NYC event with a fellow PDA member and another concerned constituent and want to share our report with you.  However, first a disclaimer:  I have been under the weather with the nasty upper respiratory thing that has been going around and it sorely diminished my note taking abilities.  Also, I should mention that the report will focus on our experience with regard to Rep. Nadler and impeachment as opposed to the event itself.

There are two golden opportunities to bird-dog Rep. Nadler this coming weekend, but before I go into details, I would like to let you know that an open letter to Rep. Nadler urging him to support Rep. Wexler's call for impeachment hearings in the House Judiciary Committee was sent yesterday by a group of concerned citizens working together under the banner AskNadler2Impeach.org.  We wanted it to reach him this week while he is still in the city on recess and chose to send it yesterday with 133 signers although it is clear that there are many others who would still like to cosign.  AskNadler2Impeach.org is currently being constructed and as soon as it is up and running the site will host the letter and a petition to Rep. Nadler asking him to support impeachment.  You will be first to know when it is operational (hopefully next week).

A group of New York's grass roots, anti-war, pro-impeachment and civil liberties activists will gather to greet John at 125th Street and Broadway at 10 A.M.  and proceed downtown to a rally at 4:30 p.m. at the Parish Room at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery. Sharing their views on impeachment with John Nirenberg will be leading impeachment expert and advocate Elizabeth Holtzman, Denis Moynihan from Democracy Now!, Clarice Torrence, President, NY Metro Area Postal Union, APWU, AFL-CIO, and others.

The citizens of this nation need a good talking-to, not a talking point. It's time for the citizens to stand up and insist that their elected officials perform their duties as public servants and defendants of the Constitution instead of as tin-plated demigods of political voodoo and power-plays.

In Harper's October issue Garret Keizer writes Specific Suggestion: General Strike.  He looks the reality that the system is broken straight in the eye and, like me, sees impeachment as the solution.  He calls for "not working until the president and the shadow president resign or [are] impeached."

At the end of August Representative Jerry Nadler (Nadler) from New York City’s Congressional District 8 met with about twenty of his constituents to discuss impeachment.  This meeting was arranged in response to letters the Congressman received from his constituents indicating their concern about what is going on with our government and requesting that he support impeachment.  It says volumes that Nadler set aside the time to meet with us and gave us a full hour.  It was clear in how he addressed us and how he ran the meeting that he took our concerns and the issue of impeachment seriously.  And here is what he and we had to say...

This Wednesday evening, most likely the entire NY Congressional Delegation will attend a fund-raiser birthday party for Congressman Charlie Rangel.

Senator Hillary Clinton will be a "special guest", and even national treasure Aretha Franklin will be attending.

It's time for us to demand R-E-S-P-E-C-T from our Congressional Representatives and demand that they represent the people of NY and take action to end the Iraq war funding or move forward on the Impeachment of Bush & Cheney.

This protest is being organized by members OF PDA NY 14th CD chapter and several other activist groups working for impeachment.

Special Note for New Yorkers in CD 8:  if you haven't already, please vote in this poll on impeachment/censure.  I have posted this poll in preparation for a meeting with Representative Nadler on impeachment.  Your help is very much appreciated.
