Also, Hardball is taking on Rush's Operation Kaos and Olberman named Rush the worst person of the week for not recognizing the Hispanic mayor of LA and then saying that he thought the guy was the shoeshine boy or something like that, In Rush's mind a brown male in LA who is not selling Rush drugs must be the shoeshine boy. Makes perfect since Rush is still waiting to be thanked for his ancestors freeing the slaves in the Civil War.

this diary is the first in a new series that I am going to be doing - some with the folks at ePluribus Media in this area.
IDs, redistricting, stuff like that. I may call each diary "The republican war on voting rights" and just make them "part 2", "part 3", etc.
good luck in MO - wasn't there a big issue there with voter registration recently? And wasn't there a big deal with the odious Brad Schlozman as US Attorney there too?

was struck down by the MO Supreme Court in 2006. They had no bills in the House or Senate this year, so we won't be affected by the new Supreme Court decision.
Schlozman successfully prosecuted three ACORN workers for turning in bogus petitions. It was a complete bullshit case but there was lots of talk about "rampant voter fraud."
Our main concerns:
Looking forward to your series.

I hear a lot of talk about Hillary positioning herself for 2012. She's supposed to be doing this by either damaging Obama now by prolonging the primaries or by not working for him when he becomes the nominee.
So here's my question: If either of these scenarios is true, who on this green earth thinks Hillary would be embraced in 2012? What makes her or anybody think she wouldn't be run out of the party on a rusty rail instead?

Temple University was founded by a man who gave the exact same, word for word, speech, 3000 times. All across the country. Raising money. That was the only seed money for Temple University, now 35000+ students in North Philly. Speeches matter, even if they've been spoken before.

but I could listen to him talk for hours and hours and hours. It's not a man-crush though, and it's certainly not because I'm in the cult (at least as far as THEY know! muahahaha).
It's just nice to hear someone who can talk intelligently at length. For what it's worth, I feel the same way when Clinton is talking about policy and not discussing Obama. Then she gets a little hint of anger in her voice that grates on me a bit. I suspect Clinton supporters feel something similar about Obama.
Anyway, let's hope this thing ends soon so we can get back to targeting McCain full time.
PS. Has anyone run into the problem of double-taking on a metaphor you want to use about McCain because of his history as a POW? I hadn't given much thought to how violent some of our metaphors are until I started rejecting some of the more callous ones ("beating him like a drum", etc.).

Pawnbrokers thrive as US economy falters WASHINGTON (AFP) — As other businesses struggle in an economic slowdown, US pawnbrokers are thriving thanks to increasing numbers of Americans forced to separate with their family jewels to make ends meet. Power tools, stereos and above all jewelry -- given the high price of gold -- are pawned for between one and three months in exchange for a loan. If clients don't come back to recover their goods, they are sold off. Dave Adelman, president of the National Pawnbrokers Association which represents 2,400 pawnbrokers, said the average pawn loan is 60 dollars, which "helps pay the rent, keep the lights on and gas in their cars to get to work." At Hock Shoppe pawnbrokers in Fresno, California, 28-year-old Andrea Santiago was pawning her rings. "I'm here every time we run out of gas or bus money," she said. But this time is a bit different -- she needs the money for a birthday party for her seven-year-old daughter.

Why pawn your own stuff while your neighbors still have things?

I'm totally bummed! I really could have used the pick-me-up.
Anyway...
Evening. 68 in Houston after a rainy day. The city inspector is coming back on Wednesday - another one of those "between such-and-such and such-and-such" deals. Blech.
Lost another online friend to cancer. This year will be the year I remember losing so many online friends to the big "C". She fought hard and tried everything under the sun, but in the end her body gave out. She was one of the first people I met online when we kept accidentally bumping into each other on the same forums back when I was a late nighter - gosh, back in 2000. It's hard to believe I've known her for that long. Over the last year she just wasn't online as much due to treatment. She'll be missed by many.
Have a great evening and be sure to give your friends and loved ones a hug - online and off.

The spin for Hillary is just off the scale. Of course General Electric (Iraq defense contractor) wants Hillary, either as the nominee who can be defeated in the general by McSame. Or they actually want the Clintons back in the WH because they know she'll be their girl.
But I wonder how David Gregory really feels about that unbelievable (unconscionable) biased spin for Hillary that they bombarded their airwaves with all day today. I wonder if he is feeling secret self-loathing for having to read their damn MSNBC script on camera, making such over-the-top cheerleading "Clinton is just amazing and she's really back in this game!" spiels, while every mention of Obama is in context of some casting of doubt (at least) on Barack's credentials to be president or how he's just got too much "baggage" to win against McCain, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
I was just slack-jawed listening to some of this crap which (it seemed was being simulcast on both MSNBC and Air America Radio. I kept waiting for Rachel Maddow to come on and make some sardonic comment about the spin. But no...the MSNBC broadcast just kept on and on...like it was the real thing, not excerpted for snark.
How can David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell live with themselves for how unscrupulous is this Hillary propaganda, and their participation in it the night before the Primary of our lives? I am so angry and appalled.
They sounded just like they sounded in the jingoistic buildup to the invasion of Iraq. Just so chirpy supportive of Hillary, just like they were of "The President" and all of BushCo's blatant lies fabricated just to sell us "the war", using the likes of Gregory and Mitchell.
I needed to ranthere.

by oscarsmom on Mon May 05, 2008 at 07:01:14 PM PDT
When I got home, I turned on BBC-America evening news. That was also a relief. They, at least, are reporting just "the news" about the Primary, with no evidence of spin in either direction.
Barack on C-Span? I'm there!

Laura Bush says:
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US First Lady Laura Bush accused Myanmar's military rulers Monday of failing to warn their citizens in time about a killer cyclone and pressed the junta to accept US aid in the disaster's wake. "Although they were aware of the threat, Burma's state-run media failed to issue a timely warning to citizens in the storm's path," Bush said in an unusual appearance at the White House briefing room podium.

Did they have Laura do the "unusual" appearance because George would have been laughed out of the room?

Tonight, for the first time in recent memory, Dan Abrams didn't begin his show with footage of Wright.
The media is finally getting tired gnawing on this particular chew toy, and they are sniffing around for some fresh indignation to loop.
If it's always Obama getting slammed it starts to look bad, so I'm guessing Hillary is up next.

The truth sucks sometimes, so let's go with the one who tells us about the pretty ponies.
Foresight, judgment, planning for the future, investment, intelligence, wisdom, and competence are SO overrated. Where's the White candidate to give me my pink pony, free beer, and unlimited free doughnuts?
